August 7, 1942 Thirteen B-17's of the 19th Bomb Group, led by Lt. Colonel Richard H. Carmichael, hit Vunakanau airfield in coordination with Marine landings on Gaudalcanal. B-26's attack Lae, and a B-17 and a B-25 each attack a submarine in the Gulf of Papua.
August 7, 1942 Three B-24's dispatched to bomb Kiska return with their bombs due to solid overcast. Four more B-24's also depart for Kiska. One turns back with mechanical trouble, the others abort mission over target due to undercast. One B-24, four P-38's and an LB-30 fly two air coverage missions at Nazan Bay for Navy tenders.
