August 13, 1942 Convoy, headed toward Basabua near Gona, with 3,000 construction troops, is attacked first by B-17's 76 miles northeast of Gona, followed by B-26's 20 to 25 miles north of Gona, and another B-17 attack as the convoy approaches landing position. Japanese ground forces attack at Deniki, driving Allied forces back about five miles and firmly securing Buna-Kokoda trail.
